Stormwater Facilities Must Be Maintained by Property Owners

The Engineering Department would like to remind property owners with stormwater facilities located on their site, that these facilities must be properly maintained to prevent flooding. Stormwater facilities include detention basins, drainage inlets, piping, and streams. Streams, ditches, and other open drainageways located on private property must be maintained by the private owner. Per the Township Ordinance and NJDEP requirements, private stormwater facility owners must submit a report to the Engineering Department each year from a certified stormwater inspector or professional engineer indicating the facility is being properly maintained and functioning.  The report is due by June 30th each year. These reports must be documented and submitted to the NJDEP every year in an annual report prepared by the Township.

Additionally, property owners should be aware, per NJDEP requirements, that any stockpile of salt used for winter deicing stored in parking lots must be covered to prevent washing into storm sewers. Also, any repaving of a parking lot must include retrofit of storm sewer inlets with smaller openings to prevent bottles and other debris from entering the storm sewer system.

All these requirements are mandates by NJDEP that the Township must enforce.
