Memorial Mural at Ann Van Middlesworth Park Honors Skaters

Brendan James Wilkie, known simply as “Wilkie” to his friends in the skateboard community, has been honored with a mural at the skatepark at Hillsborough Township’s Ann Van Middlesworth Park. Wilkie, who passed away in 2020, was a frequent visitor to the skatepark, where he was known for his “infectious humor” and ability to put a smile on the face of everyone he met. Jordan Gesko designed the ramp, and Dean Innocenzi painted the graffiti-style mural.

“When Jordan approached me with a design to replace old wooden ramps I couldn't have imagined how great it would come out,” said Parks Supervisor John Crossen. “His vision and insight into the needs of the skater community was inspiring. Jordan recommended Dean Innocenzi for the artwork and he was a pleasure to work with. The artwork is amazing and loved by everyone who sees it. I am grateful for this awesome experience and to work with these talented artists.”

The mural also honors Roeshaun “Row” Watson. Row, who still performed technical tricks in his 50s, passed away in 2021 after health complications. Reese, a beloved canine member of the skating community, is also included in the mural.

“Throughout the years, there was a good chance you would see one of them at the park on any given day. Now that they are gone, it’s weird not seeing them there,” said Jordan “The least we could do was pay tribute and incorporate them into the design. It makes me smile when I see it, and I know other people enjoy it too.”

“I had nothing but a positive experience working on this project. It means a lot to me to get to use my art talent to give back to the community in a meaningful way,” Dean added.

For the past two years, the skatepark at Ann Van Middlesworth Park has played host to “Shred for Wilkie,” an event focusing on mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The event is well-attended by skaters from all over the state. ###
