County Bridge No. B0301 Zion-Wertsville Road in Hillsborough/Montgomery Reopens to Vehicular Traffic

When the Zion-Wertsville Road Bridge, also known as the Rock Brook Bridge, closed for repairs in August 2021, it was only supposed to be for three to four months. However, Tropical Storm Ida hit, causing further damage to the historic bridge.  Now, two years later, County Bridge No. B0301, located on Zion-Wertsville Road in Hillsborough and Montgomery, is once again open to vehicular traffic.

“The reconstruction of the stone arch bridge is now substantially complete and the segment of Zion-Wertsville Road was reopened to traffic on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 2:15 p.m.,” said an update on the Somerset County website. “Remaining items of work will be done off the roadway or with minimal, intermittent impact to traffic.”

The Rock Brook Bridge, carrying Zion-Wertsville Road over the Rock Brook in the townships of Hillsborough and Montgomery, was originally constructed in 1825 and is individually listed in the State and National Register of Historic Places.

“We are glad to see the Rock Brook Bridge once again open for traffic,” stated Mayor Shawn Lipani at the September 26th Township Committee meeting.
