Tree Seedling Distribution - April 24, 2021

A Guide to the New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign Seedling Distribution in Hillsborough Township

In 2012 superstorm Sandy left many communities with dead and damaged trees. The New Jersey Tree Recovery campaign is a partnership between the Arbor Day Foundation and the NJ State Forestry Service. The campaign focuses on “providing trees to homeowners and communities who lost their urban canopy in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.”

As reported by the Arbor Day Foundation, more than 5 million trees have been distributed to date with over 950 planting events, yet still more are needed to help replace trees lost from natural disasters, disease and industry.

Hillsborough Township has partnered with these organizations to provide residents with free bare root seedlings to plant in their yards as a way of reestablishing neighborhood trees.

On April 24th, between 8am and 12pm, the Hillsborough Township Public Works Department will distribute 6” - 24” high bare root tree seedlings to residents at the Ann Van Middlesworth Park, located at 570 Pleasant View Road.

Seedlings are available on a first come, first served basis and come with instructions on how to store, care for, and plant the trees. The guides help residents choose the right place on a property to plant a tree, while keeping in mind the tree's full-grown size in the future. Residents should plant the seedlings within two days after pickup to prevent the roots from drying out.

Quantities are limited and pre-registration on Community Pass is required to obtain the seedlings. Residents are asked to complete and return an Impact Story Interview as part of their participation in the program.

The event is working hard to keep residents safe and will follow the State's COVID-19 recommendations. Residents must wear a mask and adhere to social distancing to participate in the event. This event is for Hillsborough Township residents only and requires a Photo ID.

More information on this program and planting instructions can be found on the New Jersey Recovery page on the Arbor Day Foundation’s website or the New Jersey Forest Service website.
