Township Committee Recognizes September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

At the September 8th meeting, the Township Committee recognized September as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.  The month-long initiative is known through the United States and helps raise awareness that prevention is possible, treatment is effective and people do recover.

“In these challenging times, messages of hope and healing are needed now more than ever.  The Township Committee vows to continue to support suicide awareness programs dedicated to helping our community,”stated Mayor Doug Tomson.

Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, race, orientation, income level, religion, or background. Suicide is the 4th leading cause of death of among adults in the US, and the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-34, and is one of the most tragic events a family and community can experience.

Hillsborough is no different than any other community in the country, but we choose to publicly state that it lends its full support behind local educators, mental health professionals, athletic coaches, scout leaders, police officers, and parents as community partners in being available to one another.  The goal of one of our local organizations, BORO SAFE, is to raise community awareness that suicide is preventable. Residents are encouraged to educate themselves of the warning signs of suicide, understand suicide is preventable, and that there are resources available.

If anyone is in crisis or experiencing suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273 TALK (8255).
