Catherine Clerico Santonastaso: A Legacy Remembered

The Hillsborough Township Committee honored a long-time Hillsborough resident and public servant with a proclamation, in memoriam, at the February 28th Township Committee meeting.

“Growing up in Hillsborough, you meet so many outstanding members of the community over the years,” said Committeeman James Ruh, Jr. “That’s why when I was approached by friends of the family about honoring Catherine’s legacy, I was happy to help make that happen.”

Catherine Santonastaso was born on December 26, 1919, in Hillsborough, and attended local schools before graduating from Somerville High School. She began her 32-year career with Hillsborough Township in 1955 serving as a Clerk with the Board of Health, Board of Adjustment, and Planning Board and also working as Assistant to the Tax Collector. Catherine retired from Hillsborough Township after serving as Township Clerk for 17 years.

Ms. Santonastaso was the co-founder of the Santonastaso/Snyder Scholarship fund given annually to a Hillsborough High School Senior interested in a career in community service. To date, the scholarship fund has given over $10,000 to high school students. Ms. Santonastaso was also active with the Somerset County Young Republicans Organization and served on the Somerset County Municipal Clerks Organization as its Chairwoman. In retirement, Catherine volunteered her services to St. Joseph’s Church in Millstone where she was a communicant.

Catherine Clerico Santonastaso married Sal Santonastaso on April 24, 1947, and had two children, Sally Treonze and Gary Santonastaso. She is survived by her children Sally and her husband Anthony, Gary and his wife Donna, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
