Apex Sports & Events (APEX) Breaks Ground

Complex Offers Both Indoor and Outdoor Recreational Activities

Since approval of the Apex Sports & Events (APEX) project by the Hillsborough Planning Board in June of this year, the project planning teams are at a crucial time in the pre-opening and construction development processes. APEX hosted their groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, September 27 and construction will officially begin on the much-anticipated sports and recreation facility.

The ceremony took take place on the easterly portion of the existing baseball complex at Mountain View Park. Representatives from Hillsborough Township, Somerset County, and the NJ State Legislature were in attendance to celebrate this special and monumental moment since inception of the project. “Our community is ready for an asset like Apex Sports & Events,” said Hillsborough Mayor Gloria McCauley. “The facility will be paramount in giving our youth a wide range of sports, recreation, and entertainment options; and it doesn’t stop there. The design of the facility will also offer corporate meeting and group event spaces, which in turn will bring our community closer together.”

Construction of the APEX complex adjacent to Mountain View Park is being made possible by a land swap authorized by the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders. The county will receive 19.5 acres of land on Hillsborough Road in exchange for the APEX property site on Mountain View Road. “This property will be added to the county’s extensive farmland preservation program,” said Freeholder Mark Caliguire, agricultural development liaison.

Somerset County, Hillsborough Township and APEX have worked together to ensure that the facility is available to the local and regional communities, benefiting the youth of Hillsborough Township first. One of the contemporary outdoor turf fields will provide 400 hours of reserved prime time for the Hillsborough Township Parks and Recreation Department. As another added benefit, Hillsborough-based 501(c)3 organizations will be able to rent playing time at 50% of typical rental rates on this field. Owner and visionary Gregg Wilke mentions, “The ultimate vision and concept of the facility was to offer Hillsborough residents and organizations the opportunity to include everyone in youth and amateur sports and recreation activities. The County and Township have been great partners in making our common dreams a reality, and we look forward to being able to offer various programs and events to our community.”

The G William Group, LLC construction team has been working with The Sports Facilities Management (SFM), Somerset County, and Hillsborough Township toward the beginning construction timeline and goals set out for a Fall 2019 opening. After groundbreaking, construction will immediately begin, and the first phases of the project will include leveling ground and pouring concrete.

“Our teams have been working hard in ensuring we keep pace in the development of this exciting project” says Procurement Director at SFM, Beth Kurrle. “The next steps will be important in showing the community progress towards seeing a physical building structure, and we anticipate pouring the foundations and starting steel erection by year end.”

Apex Sports and Events will be a state-of-the-art indoor/outdoor multi-sport athletic facility designed to serve participants in sports leagues, skill-building clinics/camps, and competition as well as sports performance training, pay-to-play recreation experiences, and youth development activities. The Apex facility will offer both indoor and outdoor full-size synthetic turf fields, allowing for regulation play in all long-field sports such as soccer, lacrosse, and football. The indoor complex will also include a hardwood court area for sports such as basketball, volleyball and futsal; a team-training area consisting of various sports performance amenities including batting cages/pitching tunnels; a rock climbing area and a play climb area; mezzanine viewing area; a cafe and concessions area; multi-purpose rooms; team rooms; and other supporting spaces.

Opening in Fall 2019, Apex Sports & Events is the state-of-the-art sports and events destination in Hillsborough, New Jersey. From sport competitions to corporate meetings, this unique facility will have an atmosphere of fun and purpose, while facilitating incredible guest experiences for the local and regional communities.
