Hillsborough Family YMCA’s Hillsborough Hop 5K and the township’s Green Living & Wellness Fair were held on June 1st. These events brought families and the community together to celebrate healthy living.
The day started with the Hillsborough Family YMCA Hop 5K. The event, one of Somerset County’s premier road-USATF sanctioned races, raises funds that help Hillsborough YMCA fulfill its mission to keep programs and services available to all, regardless of income. This year marks the 19th anniversary of the Hillsborough Hop 5K with Mayor Frank DelCore sounding the starting horn at 8am.
“It is my honor as mayor to kick off the Hillsborough Hop. This is such a great community event in partnership with the YMCA,” Mayor DelCore said.
The 3.1 mile race began at South Branch and East Mountain Road and ended with an Award Ceremony at the Municipal Complex. This year’s top male finisher was Brian Crowley of Hillsborough, who finished in 17:18.84. William Gillette came in second with a time 17:19.42, followed by Jack Kinst with a time of 17:45.31. The top female finisher was Amy Williams of Hillsborough who finished in 19:22.26, followed by Janet Tolley at 21:05.21 and Megan McArthur at 22:02.34.
After the race, the community was able to participate in the township’s Green Living & Wellness Fair which was held at the municipal building. 2019 marks the 6th anniversary of this event that raises awareness of local sources for living green and wellness. The fair now comprises a holistic approach to wellness, not just health related but for the environment as well.
This year there were 66 vendors at the fair offering their expertise and educating the community. Participating local businesses had informative presentations, displays and demonstrations to raise awareness of the many facets of living a healthy lifestyle that includes making nutritional choices, long-term life planning decisions and choosing a green lifestyle. The event also included different health screening including skin cancer screening pro by Dermatology Center in Hillsborough.
