The Mayor and Township Committee recognized Hillsborough resident Joann McVey at the July 9th Township Committee Meeting for her bravery in saving 9 individuals from a devastating fire on December 30, 2018.

Ms. McVey, a tenant living in the upstairs unit of a detached garage of the Manfready residence, woke up at 12:45 am and observed a wall of flames outside her window against the garage and began screaming, “fire-get out!” and pounding on the walls.

She woke up individuals sleeping on the first-floor bedrooms and then proceeded upstairs to wake the remainder of the Manfready family. All 9 individuals, including children ages 4, 5, 12 and 16, safely exited the house prior to the smoke alarms sounding or the fire department arriving, at which time the garage and upstairs unit had become completely engulfed in flames.

Joann McVey serves as an example to the residents of Hillsborough Township through her courage and fast actions.
