Low Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP)
The Home Energy Assistance Program helps very low-income residents with their heating and cooling bills, and makes provisions for emergency heating system services and emergency fuel assistance within the Home Energy Assistance Program. Click here for more information.
C.A.N. – Community Assistance Network (Food Pantry)
Canned goods, pasta, paper products, over the counter medications, and other supplies are available to assist families in the time of financial crisis. Donations of items or food store gift certificates gratefully accepted. Click here for a full list of items needed.
Senior Citizens Wellness Program
The very active Senior Wellness Program offers a variety of activities for each day of the work week. Exercise Class (three levels of fitness), Line Dancing, Flower Arranging, Shopping Trips, Hunterdon Medical Center’s monthly lectures and screenings on a variety of health issues, and the weekly social are all available.
Senior Citizen Transportation Program
Hillsborough Township provides bus service in the local area from Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., to senior citizens, age 60 and over, without other means of transportation. Transportation is provided to area doctors, senior wellness programs at the municipal building, grocery shopping, etc. The purpose of the program is to promote an independent lifestyle for senior residents.
Mr. Fix-It Program
This program is for seniors, age 60 and over, for help with small home projects or minor repairs. The only expense for the resident is the cost of parts or materials.
Holiday Food/Gift Distribution
Food baskets are provided for numerous Hillsborough residents for the Easter holiday, Thanksgiving and Hanukkah/Christmas holidays. Donation of items and help are always appreciated.
Volunteers are always welcome in the Social Services Department. Volunteer opportunities include: answering telephones, scheduling transportation for seniors and CAN clients, and general office duties such as filing and data entry. Community Assistance Network volunteers are needed to check expiration dates, sort groceries, prepare groceries for clients, inventory control, and to rotate the food supply.
