The Municipal Court is the Judicial Branch of your local government. It is the responsibility of the Court Office to receive and file all complaints charged by law enforcement officers and private citizens, for offenses which occur within Hillsborough Township. The kinds of complaints filed may charge a person with violations of State traffic laws, disorderly person offenses, sometimes called misdemeanors in other states; and Township Laws, called Ordinances. Other violations filed with the Court include fish & game offenses and State/County park violations.
Any person charged with a violation of a law is entitled to enter a plea of "Not Guilty" to an offense and have a trial. Municipal Court is a "summary" proceeding. That means there is no jury. The presiding Judge hears the testimony of each side, the complainant and the defendant, any witnesses, then makes a decision based on the facts presented. This is the in-court side of the operation of the Municipal Court which is open to the public during any court session.
The Administration of the Court (the Court office) is responsible for keeping the official records of violations, and reporting the results of trials and/or payments of tickets/summonses to the various departments needing the information, such as the Division of Motor Vehicles, the New Jersey State Police Identification Bureau, and other agencies.
