Lyme Disease is one of the most prevalent communicable diseases in New Jersey. It is not communicable person to person, but it is carried by a “vector”. It is caused by a spirochete (curvy shaped) bacterium, which is carried by the deer tick (now called the black legged tick- the vector) to animals and people. Not all black legged ticks carry Lyme Disease, and it is believed that a tick must be feeding on the host for at least 24 hours for infection to occur.

MRSA

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria have become a major concern for public health officials and health care providers. These bacteria, sometimes called "superbugs", are no longer able to be killed by the antibiotics that were commonly used to treat them. Once mainly a problem limited to health care facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes, there is mounting evidence that antibiotic-resistant bacteria are causing serious infections in community settings.  Please click here to learn more about MRSA.

The CDC, along with parents and school officials, also want to do everything possible to protect students from MRSA skin infections. Please click
here to view commonly asked questions that will help parents and school officials prevent the spread of MRSA in schools.
