Classical Art Apprenticeship Program (Grades 9-11)
From the body of work exhibited in the ‘High School’ category, up to twelve artists (grades 9-11, *seniors can not be considered) will be invited to compete for a one year, all expense paid apprenticeship in classical art training offered at the Art Academy of Hillsborough. Students will be selected for this competition based on the overall quality of their work,
with special attention being given to those who show a greater
understanding of the foundations of drawing and form.
These students will be invited to the Art Academy in early May where they will be given 2.5 hours to draw a still-life in charcoal from direct observation. This will give each student a level playing field on which to showcase their skills and understanding. From these twelve competitors, one will be selected for the apprenticeship.
James Hoston (www.jameshoston.com), a thirty year veteran within the art industry will jury this event. Mr. Hoston’s vast experience in almost every quarter of the industry makes him the perfect candidate for this important duty. The winner of the Apprenticeship will have earned a year of open access to study at the Art Academy of Hillsborough. In addition to this once in a lifetime educational opportunity, this student will be the recipient of a portrait commission for the fee of $1000. at the conclusion of the apprenticeship.
The portrait will be unveiled at the 2013 Hillsborough Art and Photography Exhibit and will, at that time, be placed into the Hillsborough Public Art Collection.
